Vienna - Day 1 AM

The grey clouds stubbornly remained and I saw nothing of the city from the air.

Once we were off the plane we headed to collect our pre ordered Vienna Passes which incorporated city travel on metro, bus, tram and train - but the train region didn't quite extend to the airport so we had to get another £1.80 top up ticket.

Trains run every half an hour and we were told one was due any moment, so we quickly legged it down the ramp and escalator just as the train was pulling in.  As in Prague, travel is very much on an honesty basis with no barriers to go through but you must have a valid ticket should you get stopped, luckily I remembered to "validate" our tickets just before we hopped on the train as there was an inspector onboard.

The half-hour journey through the industrial suburbs wasn't particularly interesting.

We then had to change onto the metro for about 4 stops to Stadium (can't think why).

From there it was about a 10 minute walk through a residential area to reach our hotel and as usual there were buildings sites everywhere.

I have no idea what this machine is used for but it looked interesting.

The Hilton Danube Waterfront - Ian's choice and the last time I let him choose!!!  We booked this back in June when the thought of a riverside hotel was no doubt very appealing; evening walks, sunsets etc etc.  But fast-forward to late November and the Blue Danube was decidedly grey.

The hotel is a very soulless, business style hotel where they even charge extra for internet (free on trains/buses/trams etc).  But the room was huge the view could have been wonderful.

The only plus so far was that we could check-in at just after 11:00 and so dump the cases and travel back into town.
